Research Methodologies for Videogaming and Esports Studies

Course Description

Developing a capstone project takes support and an understanding of the available resources. This 7-week course prepares students for their capstone. Students will engage with videogame and esports studies, as well as honing research, writing, and speaking skills. Students will meet virtually with the professor and conduct asynchronous peer review.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Critique the current state of video game journalism, game studies, and esports, identifying key trends and challenges for scholarly and industry intervention.
  • Evaluate and synthesize academic and industry research to inform the design of original, relevant, and rigorous research questions in game studies or esports.
  • Develop a comprehensive research plan, employing appropriate qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods to address a specific issue or opportunity in the video game or esports industry.
  • Apply inclusive research practices in the design and execution of studies, ensuring considerations of accessibility, representation, and civic responsibility in game or esports research.
  • Present research findings and design outcomes clearly, using academic and industry-specific formats, to prepare for the capstone project and professional work in the field.

Attendance/Participation:

Because this course is an asynchronous online course with no regular meeting times, attendance will be judged in two ways: timely completion of work, especially the weekly discussion posts, and regular meetings with the instructor.
