Graduate Design Foundations

Course Description

An introduction to scholarship and research methodologies in the School of Theatre as well as resources available through the Graduate School and the University. Students will explore topics related to theatrical design, creative problem solving, academic writing, narrative based art, scholarly research, and health and well-being in the entertainment industry. Prerequisite: Admission to M.F.A. in Drama, Design Concentration or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify resources and skills necessary for graduate level success

  • Evaluate information and media sources in a variety of formats

  • Apply creative problem solving to areas outside of theatrical systems

  • Experiment with various design tools

  • Demonstrate knowledge of factors that contribute to physical and/or mental health in the theater industry

Attendance/Participation:

You have 3 excused absences. No questions asked, no excuses needed. Once you miss more than your allotted 3 classes, your grade may be dropped one full letter grade. If your attendance drops below 70% by Midterm, you may be withdrawn from the class with a WF (withdraw fail).  I encourage you to meet with me before you are withdrawn from the class. If your attendance is still below 70% by the end of the semester, that is grounds for an automatic F. If you will have difficulty meeting these standards, please contact me, the Dean of Students Office and/or OARS to help you set up academic accommodations.

Late attendance will be counted as 50% of an absence.
