Advanced Stage Management

Course Description

A seminar-style course exploring the artistic and interpersonal dimensions of stage management. Students build on foundational skills to examine leadership, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Through case studies, discussion, and project-based learning, students prepare for professional roles by analyzing and applying advanced practices in production environments. Prerequisite: THR 386; Restricted to School of Theatre majors and minors.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Students will review and strengthen principles, techniques and practices related to stage management.
  • Students will consider the various stages of production in terms of the stage management team’s responsibilities, and discuss and define theatre terminology used throughout the production process.
  • Students will create production paperwork and develop editorial skills necessary to create production reports and correspondence.
  • Students will examine Actors Equity Association and other major theatrical unions and learn what the stage manager’s role and responsibilities are on a union production.
  • Students will discuss management techniques and interpersonal relationships as they relate to the role of stage manager and assistant stage manager and summarize how to apply them to the production process.

1-2 Absences: highest grade can receive in this course is an A (start with 100% to calculate grade)

3-4 Absences: highest grade can receive in this course is a B (start with 89% to calculate grade)

5 Absences: highest grade can receive in this course is a C (start with 79% to calculate grade)

6 Absences: highest grade can receive in this course is a D (start with 69% to calculate grade)

7+ Absences: Fail course

Participation

This course is a Seminar/Discussion class. Students are expected to offer opinions, venture guesses, comment, observe and share ideas regarding the discussion topic. Participation/Preparedness grade is based on being on zoom with your screen on and actively communication and being part of the discussion.
