Drama in Education

Course Description

Research and literature of drama strategies and techniques for children, ages 5 through 14. Practice in leading groups of children in drama in educational settings. Prerequisite: B.A. and B.F.A. Theatre Majors, or permission of the instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Collaborate effectively as members of a drama ensemble by demonstrating shared responsibility and mutual support.
  • Engage confidently in structured dramatic play with increasing creativity and comfort.
  • Design, facilitate, and evaluate drama lessons using developmentally appropriate pedagogical strategies.
  • Develop and articulate a personal philosophy and methodology for teaching drama informed by reflective practice and arts advocacy.
  • Demonstrate increased confidence as a drama leader, facilitator, co-learner, and reflective practitioner.
  • Identify and apply multiple drama lesson structures appropriate for educational and community settings.
  • Justify the use of drama in educational and community contexts through clear, evidence-based rationale.
  • Assess community educational and dramatic needs and design effective drama-based responses.

Attendance/Participation:

Drama is an experiential course. Your presence - physically, intellectually, emotionally, and creatively - is essential. Because this is a Community-Engaged course (Carnegie classification), we have a responsibility to our community partner. Attendance at every class is essential.

Students are expected to:

  • Attend every class.
  • Arrive on time.
  • Participate actively in all course activities.
  • Contribute positively to the class ensemble.

There are no excused or unexcused absences.

Any absence will result in 5 points deducted from the participation grade.

Two late arrivals equal one absence.
