Course Description

Exercises in dramaturgical techniques including adapting literature for performance. Composition of one-act plays.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify and practice techniques for developing a written dramatic text. (#1)

  • Articulate their own creative and collaborative process.(#2)

  • Solve creative problems using various dramatic writing techniques.(#3)

  • Create multi-faceted characters and their arcs, world, structure, and narrative, etc.(#4)

  • Determine how to give and receive constructive insights to/from fellow writers.(#5)

The course objectives are for students to demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of Playwriting. Students will complete weekly writing assignments and create a ten-minute play and a final play. Information in this class will be presented through discussion, and readings. Attendance is required.

Attendance/Participation:

Regular class attendance is key to your success in this class. You are part of the process, whether or not we are workshopping your play. We rely on you as actors, audience and value what you contribute in terms of responses and feedback. Attendance is strongly encouraged and necessary to your learning and positive experience in this class.

The class will meet 30 times this semester. You’re allowed two excused absences for any reason (illness, etc.) without penalty. Each absence thereafter will lower your participation/attendance grade. Three late arrivals to class, each under twenty minutes late, will be considered one absence.
