Course Description

Development of musicianship skills to be used specifically for the Musical theatre genre.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Read vocal music and sing melodies at sight

  • Read basic piano music and play basic piano parts at sight

  • Read and understand rhythms at a high level

  • Understand how rhythm relates to movement

  • Recognize chords and understand chord progressions

  • Recognize key signatures and understand keys and scales

  • Sing and play the piano at the same time at a basic level

  • Write basic music including melody and chords

  • Transcribe basic music after only hearing it

  • Learn and perform musical theatre harmony parts

Attendance is required. Any absences must be excused by the professor.

  • Small battery-operated piano keyboard that can be carried to class daily (Casio SA-81 or 51)

  • Headphones that connect to your battery-operated piano keyboard

  • Jazz shoes for movement classes

  • Notebook of blank manuscript paper, pen and pencils

  • Folder or binder to store assignments
