Elements of Design for the Stage

Course Description

Introduction to the basic knowledge of theatrical designs including but not limited to set, costume, lighting, sound, and media designs. No previous design experience is necessary. Course content will include lectures, class discussion, student presentations, journals, written examinations, and hands-on exploration. Prerequisite: Drama Majors or Minors.

  • Demonstrate the fundamental expressive tools of design
  • Communicate design ideas and practices
  • Investigate contemporary and historic designers and design practices
  • Apply elements of design to narrative text
  • Analyze theatrical design elements in live production

Attendance/Participation:

You have 3 excused absences. No questions asked, no excuses needed. Once you miss more than your allotted 3 classes, your grade may be dropped one full letter grade. If your attendance drops below 70% by Midterm, you may be withdrawn from the class with a WF (withdraw fail).  I encourage you to meet with me before you are withdrawn from the class. If your attendance is still below 70% by the end of the semester, that is grounds for an automatic F. If you will have difficulty meeting these standards, please contact me, the Dean of Students Office and/or OARS to help you set up academic accommodations.

Late attendance will be counted as 50% of an absence.
