Stagecrafts: Costume Lab

Course Description

Costume construction experience working in the costume studio for a School of Theatre production. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in THR 145 or previous credit for THR 145; DRAM major or School of Theatre minor or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

This course is taken concurrently with THR 145. Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate hand and machine sewing techniques that are practical for the stage.

  • Analyze a script for design and utilize research related to costumes in projects.

  • Exhibit knowledge about fabric creation/weave, fiber content, and use.

  • Demonstrate the ability to create an item of clothing using several techniques taught in class.

  • Exhibit knowledge on the history of costumes and clothing.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and participation are essential in this hands-on course. You may have one (1) absence, excused or unexcused, without penalty. Two or more absences may result in a reduction of your final course grade.

Some in-class projects and lab activities can only be completed during class time. If you must miss class, please communicate with the instructor promptly so arrangements can be made for makeup work when possible.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • One pair of good quality 7 ½”- 8 ½” dressmaking scissors/shears FOR FABRIC. (Please note: if you are left-handed, purchase proper left hand shears!)

  • Create a basic sewing kit that includes: a seam ripper, hand-sewing needles, and a measuring tape.

  • 1” binder or notebook for you to store notes and Sewing Samples from lab

  • Pens, pencils and paper as needed for taking notes

OPTIONAL: Thread for hand sewing practice
