Theatre First Year Foundations

Course Description

Introduction to the people and resources that can assist new students in developing academic skills, while also helping students gain an understanding of the workings of the School of Theatre. Students will also develop introductory tools in theatrical critique, qualitative research, and critical thinking. Prerequisite: Must have fewer than 60 credits to enroll or can enroll by Written Permission.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Develop academic skills to demonstrate the ability to identify and use campus services and resources

  • Develop goals and plans related to personal purpose, interests, or values between self and community.

  • Build connections between self and community relationships with peers, faculty, and staff.

  • Critically evaluate information and media sources in a variety of formats.

  • Incorporate and cite sources accurately and correctly.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance for this class is an important part of developing accountability to a college schedule. You will be allowed a TOTAL of 3 (three) absences, excused or unexcused, from class as per UNCG guidance on attendance. 6 (six) or more absences may result in a final grade deduction.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

You are not required to purchase a textbook for participation in this course. Readings and videos will be available in CANVAS whenever possible. Some reading will be available as eBooks through the UNCG Library system. Some readings will be scanned PDFs that you can download to your computer or read from your phone. Video resources will be available through the UNCG Library. We also strongly recommend:  

  • Access to a robust internet connection.

  • Access to a phone or camera that allows you read QR codes, take pictures, and participate in group polls in class.  

  • Academic Planner: You will need some form of academic planner or calendar. 

  • Paper, pencils, pens or other note taking devices: Note taking is an important part of academic success!
