Clinical Experience in Teaching

Course Description

Supervised in-school clinical experience. Required full-time teaching. Prerequisite: Admission to M.Ed. or M.A.T. program or permission of department.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate mastery of the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards (NCPTS) by doing the following:
    • Passing Praxis math exam and Foundations of Reading.
    • Successfully passing student teaching based on criteria in the LEA/IHE Certification of Teaching Capacity form.
    • Successfully completing edTPA.
  • For 6 weeks (30 days), assume full responsibility for planning and enacting all instruction, classroom management, discipline, and assessment, preparing lesson plans in accordance with cooperating teacher and university supervisor expectations, and maintaining careful records of students’ work.
  • Actively participate in all experiences required during the student teaching semester.
  • Complete all requirements for student teaching as directed by university supervisor and cooperating teacher.
  • Consider the classroom context, including personal, cultural, and community assets and needs, in planning content-specific lessons.
  • Design content-specific learning segments with a central focus that include content standards, learning objectives, learning tasks, instructional supports, and assessments of learning based on solid research and theory.
  • Implement lessons in ways that create a positive learning environment, deepen student learning, and use subject-specific pedagogy.
  • Assess student work using specific evaluation criteria to provide quality feedback to students and to inform future instructional decisions.
  • Demonstrate professional competencies, including communication, dress, punctuality, work ethic, and advocacy, required in the teaching field.
  • Reflect on professional growth through observation, formal evaluations, and informal dialogue to inform professional development goals.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the school and classroom.
  • Develop skills for professional collaboration and networking across settings.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and professionalism standards are detailed in the attached Student Teaching Contract, which must be signed. Copies uploaded to Canvas and provided to your cooperating teacher. Attendance forms will be due every other week.
