Course Description

Elementary grades mathematics instruction for K-5 learners. Emphasizes practical and theoretical attention to best practices, curriculum, assessment, and standards of practice focusing on Geometry, Data Analysis & Probability, and Measurement. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T., Elementary Education concentration, or permission of instructor.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Describe a vision of high-quality mathematics instruction that provides all students access to grade-level mathematical content and meaningful participation in mathematical discourse.

  • Develop mathematical knowledge for teaching elementary mathematics, specifically rational number, geometry, and data and probability.

  • Develop instructional practices central to high-quality mathematics instruction, including selecting and adapting tasks, launching tasks, and facilitating whole-class discussions.

Student interview: Do math activities with one student and write about what you learned

Class discussion plan: Look at student work and plan how you would discuss it

Curriculum analysis: Review a math curriculum and say what you would keep and change

Lesson plan and rationale: Write a full lesson plan and explain your choices

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance/participation is a graded component included in the student's final grade for this course.
