Middle Grades Science Education

Course Description

Develops candidate competencies in middle grades science instruction as related to adolescent learners. Emphases include practical and theoretical attention to best practices, curriculum, assessment, and standards of practice.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Construct knowledge and skills necessary to successfully teach science at the middle and secondary level.

  • Select and integrate theory, resources, and methods for using science content and practices to promote rigorous engagement for diverse learners.

  • Select and integrate practical teaching strategies that support student engagement with science content and practices.

  • Experience, plan, and teach activities that are consistent with the North Carolina Essential Standards, NGSS and support inquiry-based, reform-based instruction
