Course Description
Designed to prepare middle grades, secondary, and special subject or content area teachers to work with students who exhibit a variety of reading and writing levels. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education or M.Ed. program.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Reflect on disciplinary literacy and how literacy is used by experts in their field.
Explain how academic language applies to student learning outcomes in their discipline.
Utilize community resources to enhance student literacy learning and engagement in their discipline.
Design differentiated disciplinary literacy instruction and assessment to maximize student learning outcomes.
Understand how and why some students need additional support with word recognition, vocabulary, and/or comprehension to effectively read and write in their discipline.

Attendance/Participation:
You are expected to come prepared for and actively participate in all synchronous virtual class meetings. Please ensure that you have your camera on and microphone working. In addition to synchronous attendance, your participation grade requires you to read the selected chapters, articles, or view video content and complete an activity to reflect your comprehension of these class materials.
