Dual Language Instructional Practice

Course Description

Focuses on teaching in a dual language classroom setting including instructional methods as well as a theoretical framework that supports multilingualism and multiliteracy practices. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Discuss the features of different programs that address bilingualism, including the affordances and challenges, within the context of teaching elementary-aged students.
  • Apply understanding of using dual language instruction to develop bilingualism and biliteracy practices to teaching strategies, with consideration of second language learning and identity.
  • Evaluate teaching materials and methods to be used within a dual language setting.
  • Design and implement teaching strategies that address the development of language and literacy in two languages.

Course Grading Information:

Activity/Performance Measure Percentage/Points
Teams Meetings: Attendance and participation in synchronous class meetings 40 points
Online Assignments: Completion of online assignments completed outside of Teams meetings 30 points
Reading Dialogues: Responses to class readings completed online with a response partner. 15 points
Professional Learning Assignment: Choose from a list of options to complete by the end of the semester. 15 points

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance at all Teams meetings is expected for the full 2 hours. Points will be deducted for each missed meeting or for arriving tardy or leaving early. Students are expected to participate in meetings
