Internship III: Inquiry in Teaching and Learning

Course Description

Supervised in-school internship and on-campus seminar focused on multicultural education teaching to diversity, and understanding the classroom as culture. Prerequisite: ELED, MDED, or SPEL major.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply basic principles of Understanding By Design (Backwards Design) to the design of unit and lesson plans in preparation for edTPA portfolio.

  • Integrate NC State Standards within the context of lesson and unit plan design.

  • Create valid pre-post, formative, summative, performance, and differentiated means of assessing students’ work across unit and lesson plans in preparation for edTPA portfolio.

  • Integrate knowledge of individual differences (developmental levels, gender, culture, ethnicity, language, disability) into unit and lesson plan design (differentiation, equity).

  • Integrate literacy instruction into content area lesson and unit-plan design.

  • Demonstrate competence in maintaining a focus on conceptual understanding in the design of lesson and unit plans.

  • Integrate 21st Century skills into the design of unit and lesson plans.

  • Justify unit and lesson plan design on the basis of theory and research verified strategies in preparation for edTPA.

  • Demonstrate competence with professional teaching standards (TCER, CTOC) and dispositions (CDAP) within the context of a public middle school internship.

  • Demonstrate competence in professional oral communication through multiple in-class presentations and mock job interviews.
