Course Description

A study of traditional and contemporary perspectives on teaching and learning; analysis of contemporary educational issues from teachers’ perspectives; exploration of personal needs and goals in relation to teaching. Field experience in schools required.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Analyze the roles, responsibilities, professional standards, and current issues that shape the work of teachers.

  • Explain foundational principles of student learning and development and consider how students’ strengths, experiences, and needs influence classroom learning.

  • Identify how teachers use academic standards, research-based instructional practices, differentiation, and assessment to support student learning.

  • Observe and analyze classroom instruction, learning environments, student participation, and assessment practices during a supervised field experience.

  • Connect educational research and course readings to observations and experiences in elementary or middle school classrooms.

  • Demonstrate professional dispositions through preparation, participation, collaboration, communication, and responsible engagement in class and internship settings.

  • Investigate a contemporary issue affecting teachers and schools using credible sources and communicate evidence-based findings and recommendations during the TED 250 Research Expo.

  • Reflect on personal experiences, commitments, and professional goals to make an informed decision about pursuing a career in teaching.
