Course Description

This MAC Foundations course helps new students transition successfully to academic and student life at UNCG. The vision for this course is to develop a blend of exploring & claiming what you need for success at UNCG and envisioning how you can change the world through careers in education.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Become familiar with and engage with at least 3 support services and resources available at UNCG to support themselves (within this course & across the University/SOE). (e.g., Campus Library, Writing Center/Speaking Center, OSS, OIE, OSLS, SOE OSS, SOE TRC, SOE Makerspace).

  • Form strong social connections by developing positive relationships with peers, staff, and faculty. Experience a campus group which they will explore as a space of belonging.

  • Develop personal and educational leadership skills. Explore their sense of purpose, goals, plans as they begin their college experience. Practice self-reflection and self-exploration in their UNCG experience and potential connection with the field of Education.

  • Connect personal interests, values and strengths with potential academic majors, goals and career paths related to the field of Education. Develop a research project and presentation oriented around the social impact of education.

  • Learn/enact academic skills and techniques necessary for thriving at UNCG personally and academically. Practice critical thinking and critical reflection to improve academic performance. Identify and use campus services and resources that contribute to learning success both within and beyond the classroom. Critically evaluate information and media sources in a variety of formats, to accurately incorporate credible information.

93% – 100% = A (465+ points) 90% – 92% = A- (450-464 points) 87% – 89% = B+ (435-463 points) 83% – 86% = B (415-434 points) 80% – 82% = B- (400-414 points) 77% – 79% = C+ (385-399 points) 73% – 76% = C (365-384 points) 70% - 72% = C- (350-364 points) Less than 70% = F

Attendance/Participation:

An absence will result in a 0 for that day’s attendance and participation points. This penalty may be waived for excused absences, such as: participation in an authorized University activity, participation in legal proceedings, family death or illness, religious holy day, personal illness, or weather-related emergencies. Please notify your Instructors before class if you will miss. Six or more unexcused absences may result in a failing grade. Tardiness will result in a partial deduction to your attendance points.

Attendance/participation is vital to your success. Discussion participation involves being fully alert in class and engaging with quality contributions to class activities and discussions. It will be assessed based on engagement in the class, contributions to class discussions, evidence of completing the readings, and a positive attitude.
