Advanced School Social Work

Course Description

Skill-building for social work practice in the schools with emphasis on culturally sensitive student assessment and intervention, and professional standards and accountability. Prerequisite: SWK 624 and SWK 626 or permission of instructor; Corequisite: SWK 640 or SWK 647 or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant local, state and federal laws and regulations, and models of ethical decision making to multiculturally sensitive school social work practice.
  • Understand the history of school social work, its mission, and the roles and responsibilities of the profession.
  • Understand and identify forms and mechanisms of oppression, discrimination, and dynamics of power, privilege and social injustice that exist in the school system.
  • Apply their understanding of social justice and utilize strategies to advocate for human rights within the school system.
  • Identify policies at the local, state, or federal level that impact service delivery within school social work practice.
  • Use critical thinking to analyze how policies at the local, state, or federal level positively or negatively impact service delivery of school social work practice.
  • Use effective communication, relationship-building inter-professional collaboration and culturally responsive methods to facilitate engagement with students, families and school communities.
  • Use effective engagement strategies including empathy, reflective and active listening, advocacy and interpersonal skills to develop and maintain a culturally responsive relationship with students, families, school staff and school communities.
  • Identify available culturally appropriate standardized assessments or diagnostic instruments that can be utilized with students, families, or school communities during the assessment process.
  • Collect, synthesize and organize complex assessment data to identify a school-wide area of need.
  • Be knowledgeable about culturally responsive and evidenced-informed interventions that can be utilized to achieve the goals of students, groups, families, and school communities.
  • Critically evaluate and select culturally responsive and evidence-based interventions that could be utilized with students, groups, families and school communities.
  • Critically analyze data and evaluate what helps or hinders implementation of interventions in a school setting.
  • Identify and design culturally responsive evaluation methods to evaluate school social practice.

Attendance/Participation:

This course is online, asynchronous and participation is measured through weekly module assignments.
