Course Description

Examination and understanding of school social work services with emphasis on professional standards, cultural sensitivity, accountability, and program planning. Prerequisite: Junior standing; SOWK major; minor or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Carry out the values and ethics outlined in the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics as demonstrated in online discussions, quizzes, and school social worker role analysis assignment.
  • Demonstrate appropriate boundaries in the school social worker role analysis assignment.
  • Develop clearly written assignments for this course.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills around diversity in their assignments and online discussions.
  • Identify how school social workers can advance human rights and social and economic justice in their roles.
  • Demonstrate in their research of a student population how studies can be used to inform practice and practice can inform research.
  • Use knowledge of human behavior and social environment and the person-in-environment perspective to describe how to engage with families.
  • Use knowledge of human behavior and the social environment and the person-in-environment perspective when utilizing assessment tools with students.
  • Incorporate understanding of client population and demonstrate how to develop mutually agreed upon treatment outcomes in research of a student population assignment.
  • Research, identify, and describe appropriate interventions for a chosen student population.
  • Demonstrate from literature review on a student population how these students have been effectively treated.
  • Demonstrate how school social workers effectively advocate for students and their families.

This course is online, asynchronous and participation is measured through weekly module assignments.
