Course Description
Introductory course in statistics that emphasizes quantitative data analysis and interpretation. Topics covered include graphical display of data, descriptive measures, methods of data collection, probability, linear regression, correlation, interval estimates, hypothesis tests, and the use of statistical software. Prepares students for advanced courses in data analysis and research design.
Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
STA 271 also satisfies the MAC Data Analysis and Interpretation Requirement. In this MAC course, students will:
MAC-SLO 1- Apply analysis to understand data.
MAC-SLO 2- Construct and interpret data tables, charts, graphs, or other representations of data.
MAC-SLO 3- Analyze and interpret data to evaluate and test hypotheses.
In this course, student learning related to MAC-SLO1, MAC-SLO2, and MAC-SLO3 will be assessed through homework, quizzes, data assignments, online exams.
At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
SLO1: Summarize data numerically using descriptive (MAC-SLO1 & SLO2)
SLO2: Describe and represent data graphically using various techniques. (MAC- SLO1 & SLO2)
SLO3: Evaluate data production methods. (MAC SLO2)
SLO4 Calculate the probability by applying the concept of probability and its laws. (MAC SLO2)
SLO5: Describe the distinction between discrete and continuous probability models (MAC SLO3)
SLO6: Estimate confidence intervals (MAC-SLO3)
SLO7: Use hypothesis tests for inference of distributions and proportions (MAC-SLO3)
SLO8: Conduct correlation analysis and two sample comparisons (MAC-SLO1 & SLO2)
SLO9: Use a statistical software package to generate graphs and perform linear regression and statistical inference (MAC SLO2 & SLO3)
