Introduction to Literary Studies

Course Description

Reading of representative Hispanic texts, by genres. Attention will be given to basic vocabulary, concepts and techniques of literary analysis. Prerequisite: SPA 301 or SPA 302, or permission of the department.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  1. Recognize and define characteristics of major literary genres
  2. Analyze literary texts as products of specific cultural and historical contexts
  3. Formulate and support interpretive arguments using textual evidence
  4. Develop skills in summarizing, paraphrasing, and analyzing texts in Spanish
  5. Prepare and deliver oral presentations on literary topics
  6. Demonstrate understanding of cultural complexities in Hispanic societies
