Intermediate Spanish Composition for Heritage Speakers

Course Description

Emphasis on expansion of bilingual range in reading and writing. Course develops informal and formal writing skills through exploration of contemporary social and cultural topics. Prerequisite: SPA 302 or departmental permission; Notes: For heritage speakers only.

Course Specific SLOs

  • Interpret Spanish language through social, contemporary, and literary topics and readings of the Spanish-speaking world, especially those relevant to Latinos in the U.S.
  • Recognize stylistic differences in informal and formal writing in Spanish.
  • Apply communicative strategies to a variety of topics and contexts in informal and formal writing styles.
  • Utilize vocabulary learned for increased precision and clarity in students’ own writing.
  • Articulate textual meanings and diverse cultural perspectives through writing.
  • Develop an argument/thesis and organize supporting ideas efficiently.
  • Cite texts and ideas appropriately and effectively.
  • Use a spell-checking program in Spanish successfully.
  • Critique and revise one’s own and others’ writing based on content, thesis development, organization, style, grammar/language use and vocabulary.

Attendance/Participation:

Students are allowed up to 2 unexcused absences. Additional absences result in deductions from the final grade. Regular attendance, preparation, and active participation in Spanish are required. Tardiness and early departures may count toward absences.
