Foundations in Hispanic Cultures, Literatures, and Films

Course Description

Introduction to Hispanic cultures and histories through literature, film, and other cultural practices. Development of skills in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPA 204 or SPA 301 or SPA 302 or SPA 310 or permission of department.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  1. Identify key events in Latin American history and relate them to histories of other continents
  2. Interpret literary and cultural texts across historical periods and communicate such interpretations orally, with clarity, grammatical correctness and organization
  3. Develop a writing style, such as the essay or commentary, and enhance lexicon in Spanish
  4. Enhance vocabulary and oral proficiency by weekly oral presentations and class discussions
  5. Analyze contemporary social and cultural issues in Latin America orally and in writing
  6. Engage critically with artistic expressions including literature, film, and visual arts by presenting orally written summaries and analyses

Presentation of assignments in class 50%
Written assignments 50%

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and participation are essential to pass this class. There cannot be more than two absences, and students must provide a written justification for each absence and communicate in advance with the instructor.

Students cannot turn in assignments late, since they will not be counted. If students do not present their assignments orally in class, they will not get a grade. They cannot be presented if the absence is not justified.

Assignments must be corrected by the following week, otherwise a considerable number of points will be taken off.

Engagement in discussions and group work is required, for this reason, departures from class will be counted as absences or tardies.

If you need accommodation, such as needing to use the bathroom during discussions, you must process it via the OARS Office in advance.
