Gender, Crime, and Deviance

Course Description

Examines key questions in scholarly literature on gender, crime, and deviance: how gender socialization, gender roles, and institutions affect males' and females' offending, deviant behavior, and victimization. Prerequisite: None; Notes: Same as WGS 419; Students cannot receive credit for both SOC 419 and WGS 311.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Understand criminology and its feminist development.
  • Analyze gendered patterns in offending, victimization, and their intersection.
  • Understand intersectionality and crime.
  • Explore the relationship between gender and violence.
  • Comprehend the impact of gender on the criminal justice system.

Attendance/Participation:

This asynchronous course requires students to complete weekly modules in order. Pre-class assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. Thursday before each Friday module. Late submissions incur a 10% deduction per day. Students should expect to spend approximately 4–7 hours per week on course activities.
