Green Criminology

Course Description

Study of harms and crimes against the natural environment and the related impacts on human and non-human animals. Students will assess and analyze the causes and consequences of environmental crime.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Distinguish between types of environmental crimes and be able to interpret these harms within their socio-cultural context.
  • Explore the politics behind select environmental crimes.
  • Demonstrate both orally and in written form the dynamics, causes and consequences of environmental harm.
  • Engage in comparative analysis of ecological crisis, violence, human conflict and vulnerability
  • Identify and discuss the major issues in the literature on green criminology, particularly the impact of the ecological crisis on violent conflict
  • Apply key ideas from the green criminology literature to empirical case studies of environmental harm

12 Quizzes, one each week, 25 points each 300 points
5 Discussion Groups, roughly every two weeks, 40 points each 200 points
6 Films and written analyses, 50 points each 300 points
1 Final Research Project 200 points
