Course Description

Topics include the function of theory in research, concept formation, study design, data collection, and analysis strategies. Prerequisite: One sociology course or permission of instructor; Notes: SOC majors only.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of the scientific research process by formulating research questions, selecting appropriate research methods, developing sampling strategies, and identifying data collection approaches.

  • Develop and write a research proposal that integrates a research question, research design, sampling strategy, and data collection plan.

  • Evaluate social science research by assessing their scientific merits, including their research design, measurement, sampling, data collection, analysis, and conclusions.
