Introduction to the history, reading, and practice of social theory, with a focus on pre-war texts.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of classical sociological theory
  • demonstrate skills at reading a theoretical text
  • demonstrate critical thinking in their understanding of the hypotheses developed by various classical thinkers
  • critically apply classical theory to contemporary societies
  • compare and contrast at least two different ethical perspectives on a salient and contemporary issue in a global context
  • critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts or information
  • construct coherent, evidence-based arguments
