Course Description

Content includes opportunities for students enrolled in a graduate program to develop a knowledge and understanding of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and relevant Special Education legislation and litigation.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of historical foundations, legislation, and litigation

  • Analyze relevant legislation and litigation that impacts IEP development, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Apply procedural and substantive requirements to the IEP process.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of teaming

  • Explain IEP team membership and dynamics and how to facilitate engagement during IEP meetings.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the practical implementation of the IEP process and its components

  • Analyze IEP-related assessments used to develop Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFPs).

  • Complete IEP documents by formulating measurable annual goals, designing progress-monitoring plans, and specifying services, supports, and placement.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and future considerations

  • Analyze digital-age IEP practices, culturally responsive IEPs, advocacy, transition planning, and IEPs of the future.
