Instructional Methods: Students with Hearing Loss

Course Description

Strategies for facilitating deaf and hard of hearing students' acquisition of curricular content in inclusive educational settings. Emphasis on developing and implementing individualized learning plans. Prerequisite: 2.75 overall GPA and admission to the Teacher Education Program.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Name the factors that contribute to the unique learning needs of students with hearing loss.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the ELA, Science, Social Studies, and Math content and curriculum sequence included in the NC Essential Standards along with strategies to modify the content for deaf and hard of hearing students.

  • Identify characteristics of the Deaf culture and the place of Deaf culture within education of dhh student.

  • Provide appropriate strategies for students who are D/HH and/or have multiple disabilities and special needs.

  • Write individualized education plans, including a transition plan for students with hearing loss.

  • Compose a special delivery plan for students who are D/HH and/or have multiple disabilities and special needs.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact on students who are DHH of various educational placement options with regards to cultural identity, linguistic, academic and social-emotional development.

  • Demonstrate collaboration strategies necessary to complete a complex task with colleagues.

  • Modify instructional process and classroom environment to meet the physical, cognitive, cultural, and communication needs of students who are DHH.

  • Demonstrate a broad, working knowledge of research-based learning strategies and their relationship to the learning of individual students with hearing loss.

  • Demonstrate the use of knowledge about cultural and socio-economic factors in planning instructional strategies and activities that connect students to the curriculum.
