Language Teaching Methods with Deaf Students

Course Description

Principles and strategies for developing English language proficiency in deaf and hard of hearing students. Emphasis on integration of English instruction with academic content. Prerequisite: 2.75 overall GPA; SES 240; admission to the Teacher Education Program or permission of instructor

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Describe current theories of first and second language acquisition in students who are deaf and hard of hearing (NCTESS: DHH Standard 1; CEC/DHH.1K2, DHH.1.K4, DHH.1.S1, DHH.6.K2; NCPTS III 2)

  • Describe the effects and implications of hearing loss on communicative competence from a psychosociolinguistic perspective (NCTESS Standard 1; CEC/DHH.1.K4, DHH.1.K5, DHH.2.K1, DHH.2.K2; NCPTS III 2)

  • Recognize and describe basic elements of syntactic, morphologic, semantic, and pragmatic functioning in English and ASL (NCTESS: DHH Standard 1; CEC/DHH.1.K2; NCPTS III 2)

  • Identify specific instruments and alternative assessments used to assess the language acquisition of children who are Deaf and hard of hearing (NCTESS: DHH Standard 2; CEC/DHH.4.K1, DHH.4.K2, DHH.4.K3, DHH.4.S1, DHH.4.S4, DHH.4.S6, DHH.4.S7, DHH.7.S2; NCPTS IV 8; NCPTS V 1; InTASC Standard 6: Assessment)

  • Describe current models, theories, and philosophies underlying language learning practices with children who are Deaf and hard of hearing (NCTESS: DHH Standard 2; CEC/DHH.5.S5, DHH1.S1; NCPTS III 2; InTASC Standard 7: Planning for Instruction)

  • Identify research-supported instructional strategies and practices for facilitating the language fluency of students who are deaf and hard of hearing (NC TESS: DHH Standard 2; CEC/ DHH.3.S1, DHH.5.S8, DHH.5.S9, DHH.5.S9; NCPTS III 2; NCPTS IV 3; INTASC Standard 7: Planning for Instruction; INTASC Standard 8: Instructional Strategies)

  • Identify electronic print media, materials, and resources to facilitate or remediate the language performance of students who are deaf or hard of hearing under one or more existing communication options (CEC/DHH; INTASC Standard 7: Planning for Instruction; InTASC Standard 9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice)

  • Use effective interpersonal, small group communication and public communication (presentational speaking) to convey learnings regarding language facilitation and instruction with deaf and hard of hearing students (CEC/DHH DHH.6. K2, DHH.6.S2, DHH.7.S1; NCPTS IV 6 & 7)

  • Use effective written communication to convey learnings regarding language facilitation and instruction with students who are deaf or hard of hearing (CEC/DHH.6.K2, DHH.6.S3; NCPTS IV 6 & 7)
