Course Description
Study of literature by deaf authors and poets. Videotapes and reading selections pertaining to everyday lives of deaf people including ABC and number stories, residential stories, and ASL poetry. Prerequisite: SES 204 or permission of instructor

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Identify Deaf individuals who have made significant contributions to ASL/Deaf Literature both past and present.
- Show knowledge of various deaf literary genres.
- Deepen his/her understanding of Deaf culture and how it is reflected in ASL/Deaf literature from the 1900s to the present.
- Compare and contrast Deaf culture with other cultures in terms of group norms, traditions, languages, values, behavior, and identity.
- Discuss the culture and language of Deaf people as seen through the literary works of CODAs.
- Develop and use strategies for comprehension of authentic ASL/Deaf literature.
- Increase his/her enjoyment of ASL/Deaf literature.
- Identify organizations and resources which preserve and promote ASL/Deaf literature.
- Identify strategies for incorporating ASL/Deaf literature into programs for deaf and hard of hearing children in public schools.
