Course Description
Foundational knowledge and strategies for creating effective, appropriate and inclusive research-based lesson plans for K-12 learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
State the expectations of the profession including code of ethics, professional standards of practice and relevant laws and policy.
Discuss strategies that demonstrate sensitivity to the diversity of learners’ cultural norms, family and community experiences, development, and interests, and that also counteract stereotypes and incorporate contributions.
Reflect on their personal biases and access resources to deepen their own understanding of cultural, ethnic, gender and learning differences.
Name strategies appropriate for learners who have conditions commonly comorbid with deafness.
Contrast and compare major learning theories and name strategies/activities congruent with each.
Define formative and summative data and give examples of each in the classroom.
Discuss strategies that motivate and engage learners.
Develop strategies and resources for 21st Century teaching and use them in lesson planning.
Include appropriate and effective use of technology in lesson plans.
Include appropriate visual tools and organizers in lesson plans.
Write lesson objectives that include appropriate elements (condition, observable verb and criteria) for a variety of types of lesson approaches.
Demonstrates an understanding of learning theory, cultural diversity and individual difference in planning for multiple students.
