Course Description
Theoretical, practical, ethical issues in observing, assessing, and planning for young children with and without disabilities in inclusive settings. Individualized approaches for program planning and monitoring development are integrated. Prerequisite: HDF 111 or PSY 250, HDF 112, and HDF 202; Pr. or Coreq.: SES 242 and HDF 250; Note: Same as HDF 315.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical and ethical issues and Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) as they relate to assessment.
- Demonstrate understanding of the various forms and purposes of assessment.
- Demonstrate an overall understanding of formal and informal assessment tools and key terms.
- Use a variety of informal assessment tools to assess and document a child’s strengths, needs, and interests.
- Demonstrate an understanding of purposes and importance of observation as a foundation for assessment.
- Connect observations/assessment to the NC standards and knowledge of child development.
- Demonstrate the ability to gather assessment information from multiple sources (families, teachers, observations in a variety of places, etc.)
- Discuss how to include a child’s unique strengths and needs in authentic, developmentally appropriate, culturally and linguistically responsive, multidimensional assessment methods.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop and plan individual and developmentally appropriate Learning Experiences (LEs) based on assessment information.
- Demonstrate the ability to connect LEs to the NC standards, assets, and strengths/needs of the children observed.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to identify children who need additional services through the special education assessment process (e.g., understand the screening, assessment, and individual intervention planning process).
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge of IEP/IFSP development and implementation and recognize how goals and objectives are embedded into curriculum activities.
