Course Description
Psychosociolinguistic and developmental processes in the acquisition of communication in typically developing children. Emphasis on interpersonal communication patterns in diverse cultures that contribute to and influence social interaction. Notes: Students cannot receive credit for both this course and CSD 308.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Summarize and evaluate theoretical approaches to language development.
Identify the social and communicative basis of early language development.
Identify the auditory and visual perceptual basis of early language development (birth to 5 years of age).
Describe communication practices that facilitate social interaction between children and parents/caregivers.
Recognize and explain communication development and use in children from diverse cultures.
Discuss the classification, features and impact of communication disorders in young children.
Based on empirical information, describe and explain individual behavior, specifically early language development using a psychosocial perspective.
Using the social and behavioral theories discussed in the course, analyze the developing language and linguistic functioning of a typically developing child from a psycholinguistic perspective, describing semantic-pragmatic, phonological and syntactic-morphological components. Students will describe and report findings and evaluate the findings of others.
Use a variety of instructional technology to communicate effectively with peers by comparing and contrasting the fundamental and essential terms in communication development.
Analyze the influence of contemporary social dilemmas, conditions or contexts on individuals, groups, or institutions using disciplinary knowledge.
