American Sign Language III

Course Description

Continuation of Sign Language II with an increased emphasis on expressive skills, receptive skills, linguistic knowledge, and integration of cultural behaviors in conversational settings. Prerequisite: SES 102; Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services major.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Increase understanding of ASL grammar
  • Compare and contrast deaf culture with other cultures in group norms, traditions, languages, values, behavior and identity
  • Demonstrate the appropriate listener response and conversational strategies when interacting with deaf individuals
  • Demonstrate the appropriate techniques for role shifting, spatial structuring, sequencing events and establishing time reference when narrating a story or event in ASL.
  • Use appropriate cultural behaviors for directing and maintaining attention
  • Increase understanding of the strategies that enhance both receptive and expressive abilities
  • Describe and locate things using appropriate classifier signs
  • Demonstrate the techniques used for non-manual markers, mouth movements, eyebrow grammar, and back channel feedback.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviors, showing awareness of and respect for Deaf culture
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of geographical signs as it pertains to countries
