Course Description
American Sign Language (ASL) with emphasis on the development of basic receptive and expressive skills. ASL grammar will be covered to develop rudimentary conversational skills in ASL. Introduction to Deaf culture and community. Prerequisite: Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services major; Corequisite: SES 245.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Demonstrate an awareness and respect for the language and the culture of the Deaf community.
Compare and contrast Deaf culture with other cultures in terms of group norms, traditions, languages, values, behavior, and identification.
Use appropriate rules for social interaction when Deaf individuals are present.
Converse in American Sign Language to introduce oneself, appropriately sign greetings and leave takings, ask for help, discuss daily routines, impart personal information such as addresses, telephone numbers and town of residence at a beginning level.
Demonstrate the ability to use turn-taking skills and backchannel feedback when conversing with a Deaf person, as well as the ability to repair communication breakdowns.
Identify and use correct ASL grammatical features for question forms, assertion, negation, referents, and topic/comment information.
Identify and use spatial agreement when communicating expressively and correctly visualize the signer’s perspective when receiving spatial information.
Identify and use classifiers appropriate to a beginner’s level.
Demonstrate correct production and receptive knowledge of approximately 1,000 sign concepts.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of the manual alphabet and number system of ASL.
