Practicum in Clinical Intervention

Course Description

Supervised application of psychological principles to the assessment and therapeutic change of individual or group behavior, generally with clients in the UNCG Psychology Clinic. Prerequisite: PSY 707, PSY 708, and malpractice insurance.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Show expected level of competency in the conduct of psychological evaluation (which may include both formal and informal assessment and testing) using evidence-based approaches.
  • Show expected level of competency in the conduct of psychosocial intervention (which may include individual and group psychotherapy) using evidence-based approaches.
  • Show consistent compliance with practicum site policies and procedures, the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, and the North Carolina Psychology Board’s regulations.
  • Actively engage in supervision with a licensed psychologist in a manner that is consistent with the program’s rules and policies as well as those of the NC Psychology Board.

Performance of clinical duties: minimum number of direct service hours is required; evidence of competency in all domains assessed by the program-approved competency form is required N/A

This course is graded on a S/U scale (satisfactory or unsatisfactory). Grades are based on program-approved competency evaluations and on completion of required number of face-to-face direct service hours, which vary by practicum year (see the program’s Student Handbook for hours expectations). Student competencies are evaluated based on their year of training or level of experience.

Attendance/Participation:

Practicum is a hands-on, in person experience. Attendance is mandatory for all clinical duties, including but not limited to direct work with clients, supervision meetings, and weekly clinic staff meetings.
