Course Description
Survey of main issues within clinical psychology. Includes nature and ethics of profession, research methodologies, clinical assessment, models of therapy including empirically validated treatments, and systems of care principles. Prerequisite: Grade of at least a C- in PSY 121

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Describe history and evolution of the field of clinical psychology, and the pathways to different types of careers within the field.
- Articulate the importance of consideration of culture in clinical psychology, and how cultural competence can be fostered among psychologists.
- Know and apply key ethical principles in psychological intervention, assessment, and research.
- Demonstrate understanding of the role of research in clinical psychology, including different study designs and translation into evidence-based practice.
- Describe the processes of assessment and diagnosis in the practice of clinical psychology, with attention to different approaches and perspectives utilized over time and across theoretical orientations.
- Summarize the different theoretical models of psychotherapy and distinguish between the goals and tools used to deliver each.
- Detail the ways in which a developmental perspective is important in clinical psychology.

Attendance/Participation:
Regular class attendance is a vital part of attending college. Your final grade will reflect whether or not you attended class regularly, and class participation comprises 5% of your overall final grade.
Due to class size, I will not assess attendance each and every class period, but there will be class participation activities that occur at regular intervals, and will constitute 5% of your final grade.
Missing over three absences could negatively impact your class participation grade.

- Pomerantz, A. M. (2024). Clinical Psychology: Science, Practice, and Diversity. (6th edition). Sage. This textbook is required for class, and necessary for student success. Students can purchase or rent the textbook. Students may obtain a hard-copy or e-text, new or used textbook.
