Applied Policy Research

Course Description

Work with community partners in identifying issues that may need analysis; determining when a problem exists and what is causing it; defining and prioritizing the goals to be achieved in addressing the problem; developing creative alternatives to address the problem; analyzing the impact of different alternatives.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • improve skills in time management, research, problem-solving, and decision making
  • participate in organizational processes and observe management/administrative settings
  • apply public service values in a specific context in a government or nonprofit agency
  • communicate and interact effectively with diverse professionals, client groups, and the public
  • demonstrate competence in professional written, visual, and oral communication
  • analyze the agency’s external and internal environment to understand the public service perspective
