Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

This core course is a general survey of North Carolina nonprofit law and US federal tax law related to nonprofit organizations, with a particular focus on charitable and religious organizations. An additional emphasis will be on the fiduciary duties of nonprofit directors and officers. In this course, we will cover a range of topics related to such organizations: formation; operation, including unrelated business income as well as lobby and political engagement activities; and reorganization, merger and dissolution

Goals for the class

  • Teach nonprofit law and have the skills to form a nonprofit 501c3 organization
  • Simulate a law school class
  • Create a nonprofit networking opportunity
