Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts or information.
Construct coherent, evidence-based arguments.
Assignments:
Discussion Posts (on Canvas): In order to earn full credit, you must create one original post in response to the prompt (between 150-250 words—not a limit, just a suggestion) AND respond to AT LEAST one other student’s post. These should be thoughtful, respectful, and engaging (e.g. not just responding “I agree!” or “I disagree!” but explain WHY).
Reading Comprehension Quizzes: After the first week, weekly quizzes will be assigned to assess reading comprehension of the new material.
Personal Workshops: This assignment is meant to engage students in ethical application of the material they learn from class. Students will be expected to submit a version of the group’s solution on Canvas.
Honors Workshop (for honors students only): Short paper.
Midterms: Each will be an exam (submitted online).
Final: Will be a cumulative exam (submitted online).
Below is the breakdown for grades in this class. If you have any questions, please contact us. There are no make-up assignments or extra credit opportunities for this class. Only the Midterm and Final exam may be turned in late; however, each day late is another 10 percent deducted from the total for up to seven days. After that time, these assignments will not be accepted.
The grading scale to be used in this course severely penalizes failure to submit an assignment, so students who utterly fail to submit assignments will jeopardize their overall course grade to a much greater extent than students who submit assignments that are of poor quality.
