Violence in the Modern World

Course Description

Designed to provide a cross-disciplinary examination of violence and peace. Students will be engaged in an exploration of world issues and their impact at the local level.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Explain the foundation and development of peace and conflict studies;

  • Identify techniques used for peace development and reconciliation;

  • Examine how instances of ethnic conflict and genocide have taken place in the modern world;

  • Explore how the environment, gender, economics, and religion impact many modern conflicts;

  • Evaluate the roots of conflict and related techniques for its non-violent transformation;

  • Describe dynamic elements of different cultures (MAC SLO 1);

  • Explain how similarities, differences, and connections among different groups of people or global systems affect one another over time and place (MAC SLO 2).

You will not, however, be assigned an attendance or participation grade beyond the assignments outlined above. You will earn “Participation Points” in this course through light, low-stakes activities that you will find within the modules on Canvas.
