Course Description

Focuses on advanced nurse anesthesia knowledge of the pharmacology of cardiovascular drugs. Prerequisite: NUR 751.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Evaluate the pharmacological principles related to sympathomimetic drugs, digitalis and related drugs, alpha and beta receptor antagonists, antihypertensive drugs, anticoagulants, antidysrhythmic drugs, calcium channel blockers, prostaglandins, minerals, electrolytes, and IV anesthetic agents.
  • Contrast the pharmacokinetics of sympathomimetic drugs, digitalis and related drugs, alpha and beta receptor antagonists, antihypertensive drugs, anticoagulants, antidysrhythmic drugs, calcium channel blockers, prostaglandins, minerals, electrolytes, and IV anesthetic agents.
  • Predict the influence of various physiological changes on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of sympathomimetic drugs, digitalis and related drugs, alpha and beta receptor antagonists, antihypertensive drugs, anticoagulants, antidysrhythmic drugs, calcium channel blockers, prostaglandins, minerals, electrolytes, and IV anesthetic agents.
  • Design an anesthetic plan incorporating at least one of the following drugs, sympathomimetic drugs, digitalis and related drugs, alpha and beta receptor antagonists, antihypertensive drugs, anticoagulants, antidysrhythmic drugs, calcium channel blockers, prostaglandins minerals, and electrolytes, with consideration of the patient’s pathophysiological and pharmacological status.
