Senior Capstone

Course Description

A concentrated 7 1/2-week practicum where students simulate the roles of the employed graduate under the guidance of a selected nursing preceptor and a faculty facilitator. Prerequisite: Admission to M.S.N. Prelicensure Entry-Level Concentration, NUR 503, NUR 503L, NUR 504, NUR 504L, NUR 510, NUR 510L, NUR 611, NUR 611L , NUR 613, NUR 613L, NUR 618, NUR 618L, NUR 705; Corequisite: NUR 622.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Assume the roles of the professional nurse at a beginning level when providing quality and safe care in a variety of settings.

  • Demonstrate awareness of self, and individuals, families, groups, and communities in their environment.

  • Apply the concepts of environmental influence on the health of individuals, families, groups, and communities to the delivery of nursing care.

  • Demonstrate nursing concepts and skills as they apply to individuals, families, groups, and communities.

  • Examine the wellness, illness, and disease and dysfunction components of health as they apply to selected individuals, families, groups, and communities.

  • Integrate inquiry into nursing practice.

  • Apply the art of caring in practice with individuals, families, groups, and communities.

  • Practice as a nursing generalist in promoting the wellbeing of individuals, families, groups, and communities.

  • Integrate the primary roles of the professional nurse in the management and delivery of care.

Pass/Not Pass. All clinical hours and course assignments must be completed at a satisfactory level to pass the course.

Attendance/Participation:

This precepted clinical course consists mainly of precepted hours in an assigned agency, as well as clinical conferences, simulation and seminars with the faculty facilitator. Attendance is required for all course components.

Absences and tardiness (excused or unexcused) for clinical experiences may jeopardize the student’s ability to meet the required number of clinical hours to pass the course. Punctual attendance in clinical is required to meet the objectives of the clinical component of the course.
