Nursing Leadership and Management

Course Description

Provides the student with a foundational knowledge of management and leadership skills using applications based on problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking. Core management concepts include planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Other topics include legal and ethical decision making and advocacy. Prerequisite: Admission to M.S.N. Prelicensure Entry-Level Concentration, NUR 501, NUR 503, NUR 503L, NUR 504, NUR 504L, NUR 508, NUR 509, NUR 613, NUR 613L, NUR 614 (or their equivalent).

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Analyze the roles and functions of the nurse leader/manager in the management process.
  • Compare and contrast leadership and management styles in a variety of health care environments.
  • Develop knowledge of health care policy, finance, and regulatory environments at the local, state, and national level.
  • Apply health care quality improvement and safety concepts to the functions of leadership and management.
  • Assess power and empowerment in a caring environment.
  • Integrate communication and collaboration strategies for effective leadership and management of individuals and groups.
  • Apply critical thinking and legal and ethical decision making to the functions of leadership and management.
  • Evaluate legal and economic issues that impact health care, including cost and financing.
  • Evaluate the role of the nurse and nurse leader in health care data management and informatics.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the 6 core Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) concepts to the functions of leadership and management.
  • Design a personal philosophy of leadership.
