Course Description
Study of selected pathophysiologic changes that influence disease processes across the lifespan and related pharmacological therapies. Prerequisite: NUR 500, NUR 502, NUR 508.
Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Explain pathophysiologic changes at the cellular level and their relation to disease processes across the lifespan.
- Interpret pharmacological actions of drugs as they relate to pathophysiologic disease processes.
- Assess pharmacological therapies in the prevention and management of disease processes.
- Examine concepts of medication safety and pharmacological effects on integrated body systems.
- Analyze protective and predictive factors, including genetic and cultural influences, and their effects on the health of individuals, communities, and populations.
- Appraise appropriate interventions from nursing and other interprofessional disciplines in the treatment of specific disease processes.
- Develop patient teaching materials that can be used to inform the client of various pathophysiology and pharmacology topics.
Course Grading Information:
| Activity/Performance Measure | Percentage/Points |
|---|---|
| Assignments (includes ATI modules) ATI Post Module Quizzes | 10% |
| Exam 1 | 15% |
| Exam 2 | 15% |
| Exam 3 | 15% |
| Cumulative Final Exam | 25% |
| ATI Proctored Exam(s) (NurseThink CJE Exam) | 5% |
| Group presentation – complex pt | 15% |
The practice (4%) and proctored (6%) ATI RN Pharmacology exam grade will account for 10% of the final grade for the course. The grades for the ATI content-specific course exam will be based on proficiency levels:
- Proficiency Level 3 – ATI exam grade 100%
- Proficiency Level 2 – ATI exam grade 85%
- Proficiency Level 1 – ATI exam grades 75%
- Below Proficiency Level 1 – ATI exam grade 65%
The score associated with the Benchmark Range achieved on the proctored assessment will account for 4 potential points (4%) of the final grade for the course. Points are determined based on the assessment score. Remediation of the Proctored assessment is marked as complete 2 points (100) or incomplete 0 points (0) and accounts for (2%) of the final course grade.
Points Achieved on the Benchmark Assessment Level 3 | 4 Points Level 2 | 3 Points Level 1 | 1 Point
Grading Scale
| Percentage | Letter Grade |
|---|---|
| 100-92% | A |
| 91-85% | B |
| 84-77% | C |
| 76% or less | F |
Attendance/Participation:
Students must attend all class dates. Excused absences from classes will need to be made up and Unexcused absences will need to be made up and result in 5-point reduction for each event. The 5-point reduction will be taken off final grade for the class i.e., 100 in a class for a 1-time unexcused absence will result in a final grade of 95, two unexcused absences in a class will result in a final grade of 90. Another example 90 in a class for a 1-time unexcused absence will result in a final grade of 85, two unexcused absences in a class will result in a final grade of 80.
No point reduction or grade penalty will result for an “Excused Absence.”
An Excused absence is:
- Verified illness of the student or a dependent family member
- Death or funeral in the family
- Court appearance
- Military obligations
The University’s Academic Calendar is posted 5 years out and is publicly available for viewing, therefore we asked that students review the academic calendar to plan personal events and vacations that will not interfere with scheduled class times. Absences from classes and/or clinicals that are not excused will result in point reduction or grade penalties as described above. Notifying faculty that you will be on vacation is not an excused absence.
Course Materials Purchased by the Students:
- Capriotti, T. (2024). Davis advantage for pathophysiology: Introductory concepts and clinical perspectives (3rd ed.). F. A. Davis Company. You will need the Davis Advantage access code to access the contents used in this course, which will be used for a grade. This will be used for the entire year. You do not need to re-purchase if already purchased in the fall.
