Course Description
Introduction to nursing research and the professional nurse's role in research. Prerequisite: NUR 370 and NUR 371; overall minimum GPA of C (2.0); Current unrestricted North Carolina RN license or unrestricted RN license in a state covered by the multi-state Nurse Licensure Compact. STA 108 or equivalent.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Apply principles of quality improvement and patient safety to the development of evidence-based initiatives and outcomes that improve the quality of health care for diverse populations.
- Apply concepts of quality and safety using structure, process, and outcome measures to identify clinical questions and describe the process of changing current practice.
- Evaluate the credibility of sources of information, including Internet resources.
- Identify discrepancies between standards of care and clinical nursing practice that may adversely impact patient outcomes.
- Explain the interrelationships among theory, practice, and research.
- Use skills of inquiry, analysis, and information literacy to address practice issues.
- Integrate knowledge and methods of a variety of disciplines to inform decision-making.
- Participate in the process of retrieval, appraisal, synthesis, and dissemination of evidence to improve patient outcomes.
- Describe the basic elements of the research process and models for applying evidence to clinical practice.
- Discuss protection of human rights and ethical conduct in the research environment.
- Evaluate the principles of evidence-based practice in guiding nursing care.
