Population Health Nursing

Course Description

Nursing care of populations and communities through collaborative actions across care settings. Prerequisite: NUR 310/NUR 310L, NUR 320/NUR 320L, NUR 340/NUR 340L and NUR 360/NUR 360L (or their equivalent); NURS major; Corequisite: NUR 410/NUR 410L, NUR 420L, NUR 450.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Evaluate core functions of population health nursing, principles of epidemiology, determinants of health, health promotion, and disease and injury prevention. (BSN Essentials VII, IX; Health).
  • Identify evidence-based nursing interventions in health promotion, health care management, health education and health literacy for populations. (BSN Essentials VII, IX; Inquiry).
  • Apply the nursing process to vulnerable populations based on assessment of health determinants and availability of resources through awareness of health disparities. (BSN Essentials VII; Practice, Environment).
  • Describe the application of legal, ethical, spiritual, and cultural issues to the practice of population and global health nursing. (BSN Essentials VII, IX; Person, Practice).
  • Describe how healthcare policy, finance and regulatory environments influence local, state, national and global healthcare trends. (BSN Essentials V; Environment).
  • Collaborate with inter-professional teams to promote high quality and safe care of populations and global communities. (BSN Essentials VI, VII, IX; Caring, Practice).
  • Analyze the relationship of the environment, health, and disease for populations and global communities. (BSN Essentials VII; Environment, Health, Person).

ATI practice and proctored exams: ATI Practice Assessment (2%): Students will complete one ATI practice assessment. The score earned will be based on the student’s actual percentage score on the assessment (e.g., an 85% score earns 85% of the practice assessment portion). Remediation is assigned as directed by faculty. ATI Proctored Assessment (3%): Performance on the ATI proctored assessment will be incorporated into the course grade using ATI performance levels as follows:

Attendance/Participation:

Planned Absences: If you know you will be absent, you are required to notify the instructor via email as soon as possible and before the scheduled date of absence.

Extenuating Circumstances: In cases of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances that require your absence, please inform the instructor via email as soon as possible. Include details about the situation and, if appropriate, provide supporting documentation.

Repeated unexcused absences or failure to notify the instructor may negatively impact your grade. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis for legitimate and documented reasons.
