Seminar in Nutrition

Course Description

Review, analysis and presentation of recent research findings and issues in food and nutrition. Notes: May be repeated for credit when topic varies. Enrollment for two credits requires presentation of seminar. NTR 709A, 1 hour credit, graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U). NTR 709B, 2 hours credit, graded by letter grade.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Deliver an effective scientific presentation to an audience of nutrition researchers using the proper audiovisual equipment, information density, pace, projection and clarity of voice, professional presentation, stage presence, and mannerisms.
  • Analyze and evaluate published research studies and presentations for their scientific merit and practical applications based on the models and methodologies used and the results obtained.
  • Write an abstract that clearly and concisely summarizes a presentation and/or one or more published research articles.
  • Clearly ask and/or answer thought-provoking questions related to a specific research article, presentation.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance at each seminar is mandatory, including discussions with guest speakers. Arriving late or leaving early to either a seminar or guest speaker session will result in an absence.

Students who are unable to attend seminar must request an excused absence from the instructor before seminar.

The final grade will be docked 10% per unexcused absence.

The grade for an assignment will be lowered by 50% each day the assignment is late (i.e., 0 points will be given if the assignment is 2 days late).
