Course Description
Analysis of energy intake and metabolism; carbohydrate and lipid absorption, transport, and tissue-specific utilization. Clinical applications. Critical analysis of recent literature. Prerequisite: NTR 625, previous course in general nutrition, biochemistry and mammalian physiology, and unconditional admission to the graduate program in Nutrition or other life sciences; or permission of instructor.
Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of cellular carbohydrate and lipid metabolism
Discuss how physiological changes influence cellular metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids.
Identify mechanisms that regulate carbohydrate and lipid utilization and function.
Demonstrate an understanding of carbohydrate and lipid function
Identify how carbohydrate and lipid compounds influence individual physiological systems in humans.
Critically evaluate how carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and function affect health and disease
Identify and evaluate research methodology used to investigate carbohydrate and lipid function

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance will not be monitored, but it is expected and lack of attendance and/or participation will result in reduction of participation points.
Course Materials Purchased by the Students:
None required. Recent textbooks in the life sciences (e.g., biochemistry and cell biology) are suggested as general references but only to refresh the memory of basic concepts. PubMed will serve as the major global directory to the core knowledge featured in professional journal articles and reviewed in class. Reviews and selected research articles will be made available on canvas.
